Early
in 1983, at the request of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Midland, Texas,
I developed a 12-session sexuality education course for Midland high
school youth that I presented during the months of January through March. Word of this program began to spread throughout West Texas
and in 1986 I published the high school curriculum and began training
other churches. As of this
date, the high school program has been presented to almost 3,000 youth in
12 states.
Elementary,
Middle School, and adult sexuality programs followed shortly after the
high school course and many more thousands of children, youth, and adults
have been impacted by the “Just Say Know” ™
sexuality education programs.
My
husband Richard and I travel around the United States training
congregations to offer this comprehensive Biblically-based sexuality
education to their members.
We believe so strongly
that God intends for the church to reclaim the gift of sexual intimacy by
educating and equipping church families to see sexual intimacy as one of
God’s most precious gifts to us, but a gift that has complications and
unwanted consequences when not used as God intended.
"Created
To Be Me"™
aka "Eighter's"™
Camping Ministry
In
early fall of 1987, Rev. Stan Sawyer, Associate Minister at Memorial
Christian Church in Midland, Texas asked me to consider designing a
sexuality and spirituality camp for the Central Area “Eighter’s”
camp. This was a newly formed
camp for soon-to-be ninth grade youth that addressed issues that would
help prepare youth for high school. Stan
felt that sexuality and how it related to God was one that needed to be
addressed.
I
designed a week long “Sexuality & Spirituality” camp that we
presented the summer of 1987 at Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat in Texas.
The camp was incredibly successful and it was decided that from
that day forward that “Eighter’s” ™
would be a rite of passage experience for soon-to-be ninth grade youth
using my newly designed “Sexuality & Spirituality” program.
Our camp is known as "Created To
Be Me"™ as
well as "Eighters"™ by youth all across the country. The
summer of 2007 we went over the 4,000 mark for youth completing
“Created To Be Me”™
Eighter’s™.
The
keynotes have changed and grown through the years and the camp itself has
expanded from one camp to four camps in Texas and camps in six states
outside Texas. The curriculum
has been revised several times and is far better than when we first began,
however, the message is still the same:
God has a loving and
well designed plan for our lives as long as
we listen and use the gifts God gives us the God intended.
Then,
as now, we believe our most precious resource is today’s youth.
